CK,
The IG chicks hatched normal. No lumps. They are smaller so a bit slower than the others, otherwise normal.

Of the 5 IG chicks I have lost 2. They don't seem as robust as the RIR or NH chicks. I tend to look as if they are cold all the time. They are easily pushed around by the other chicks and don't seem to know when to get out of mums way. Fingers crossed I will end up with the remaining chicks.

Update: I hatched 15 chicks from CK's eggs. I have 8 left, about 11-12 weeks old. 4 NH, 2 RIR, 1 IG and 1 GLW. All for NH are cockerels, the rest are most probably pullets. Doing ok so far. The flock rebuild is progressing. I also have 6 1 week old chicks, 4 LS, 1 Wellsummer and I Australorp. Too young to sex at the moment. When it cools down, I look for some more fertile eggs of the same breeds.

Strange, isn't it? I was expecting at least 1 or 2 pullets but got none. I'll try again when it cools down. May be it is weather related.

CK, What breeds have you totally lost to the heat? What breeds will you continue with? The summer is too hot for everything. I am soaking the ground each morning to give the chooks some relief.

The indian game was the worst effected then the australorps and marans . the only 1 I won't go on with is the Indian Game at this stage but I haven't made up my mind what I will breed next season yet.

Do you think some breeds are just useless in the heat? So far I am keeping the few I have alive with sprinklers, etc. I wonder how they would do if I remove the sprinklers. Can heat resistance be bred into a bird? When it was 45 degrees, the crows around here were behaving as if it was 25 degrees. Would be really good if all chooks are like that.

So far I have only lost the one bird and they have not had the cool down that they would have got if I was on hand so I am happy with that I think it's the trees I have inside the pens they give loads of shade for the birds I will do the same when I move out of this place and start again it makes a great difference to them

Shade definitely make a huge difference. The problem I have is the birds digging up at the base of the trees killing it. What do you do to stop this?
