Respiratory disease has been rampant for months now. My sister lost quite a few of her breeding stock overy summer, including my beloved Romeo when he went for a holiday. I am hoping that with the cooler weather it will all go away

I also worry about people poking them. Sounds silly but I have seen some of the kids at shows banging on cages and trying to feed them bits of junk. I would end up standing next to my chicken the whole show to make sure no one was mean to my darling lol.

The Royal is quite a stressful show as they have to stay penned for the whole duration, and if they are not used to it, it can be a bit upsetting, I keep the birds I show separate from my breeders "just in case" havent shown a lot but have had no problems so far and if the stewards see a bird with any problems they usually ask them to be removed from the shed.

Well thats good to know that the stewards keep an eye on them. I think if I was ever going to show, which I would maybe just for the experience, I would go to a small show where the birds are only kept for a day or so.

As far as I know, at the moment there are only 2 shows that are longer than 1 day, they are the royal and the game bird show in Northam (thats 2 days) the rest are one day, the birds have to penned by 8.30 or 9am and its usually all over by about 2 or 3pm that day.

That sounds much better. A week is just too long for me. I would be so panicked by the end of it lol. Now I might have to come to the harvey show just to get an idea of whats involved with showing birds. And to guage the competition!

I can just see it now, sneaking down the rows, shifty eyes, peering in cages and frantically scribbling notes.
