Thought I would share my unusual nesting box idea. I havent heard of anyone using them before but they probably have. I was looking around for what to use and had considered the 20 litre drums and various other boxes etc when I decided to do a quick rubbish run to the local tip. To get to the tip you drive through an undercover area where they remove anything that could be recycled or wanted by others. It is a cheap way to buy old doors and wardrobes etc as they only charge a dollar or two for anything. Anyway I spotted 6 lawnmower catchers in a pile and thought they just might do the trick. Paid $1 each. I tech-screwed them all to a plank and the chooks love them! Nice and roomy and lined with straw, they have worked really well.

Hi Jen, glad they worked for you, I bought 6 of the darn things at our recycle place, but cost me $5 each, but the large soft feather just looked at me more or less to say "you have got to be kidding" when I put them in their sheds, and declined to use them, but the hamburgs went whoopie and love theirs.

Lol horses7, isnt it funny how one breed of chooks will love something you give/make them but another breed refuse to even go near it. My frizzled pekins love their mower catcher but coz theres only one there was always a queue waiting to use it so I thought with that and the crow problems I'll make them a set of 3 rollaway nest boxes. But of course, oh no we're not using those things we'd rather lay on the dirt in the corner lol. So they've ended up getting their beloved mower catcher back and I've given the rollaway boxes to Harriet in the new pen who just loves them.
