Well today I finished building the house in my laying hen run. Yay! Im pretty pleased with how it turned out, except for my very sore purple thumb lol. I have put a temporary little fence around the house coz I couldnt wait to put Harriet (the ex battery hen) into the place So now I've just got to finish building the main fence. The pen runs up the side of the driveway and is about 40 metres long by maybe 12 metres wide at the widest point. The back fence is straight but the front fence is along the driveway so is sort of an S bend. Because the front fence is on the driveway I'm doing it post and rail so its taking a little more time but I'll get there Here's a couple of piccies. As you can see in the second pic I havent quite finished putting up the perches inside yet.

Sure you can chooken I usually staple some old shadecloth onto the back of the lattice when I use it as a window because I find that then when it rains the water just hits the shadecloth and drips down rather than spraying into the house. I did that on the window of this house but not on the door. Mainly because I forgot lol but also as a test because I figured that it wouldnt matter so much if the rain sprays through the door coz theres no perches or anything behind the door. If the rain does cause a problem I'll then just line the back of the door as well. I forgot to add above that the house was built totally out of recycled materials, the only things I had to buy were the 2 hinges for the door and a pack of screws so Im pretty pleased with my handiwork

Fantastic job Steph, you can come and build sheds at my place anyday. The lattice idea is brilliant.

Thanks beck. I an swapping one of my lil pekin hens for two 2yr old light sussex hens this weekend so Harriet (the ex battery hen) will be happy about that, shes getting a bit lonely in there by herself.
