You need to put a fence ring around them till they get established . I have had a few crows and magpies die in the heat here this summer no galahs yet .

Sorry to hear of everyone's losses in the heat. We have been lucky and not lost any to heat stress but they do struggle. Last winter we planted a large weeping mulberry tree in the pen so my flock has definitely benefited from its shade this summer. Yesterday our favourite blue Australorp hen had a brief episode where she was suffering from exhaustion but made a quick recovery after eating some watermelon. My Australorps are generally okay with the odd day of extreme heat however they suffer a lot when we have consecutive days of it. We fill cat litter trays with water and put them in the main pen and the grower pen. The growers and the adults have learnt to stand in them to cool themselves down.
CK, are Georgie, Arthur and Gwen okay?

CK,
I have fenced off the banana trees but the chicks manage to get in, somehow. The adults used to strip the banana leaves clean. The trees are now too tall and out of reach.

Oh banana's need to be permanently fenced off from chooks but the citrus and mulberrys do well once established . the splash colour in the Australorps is the main trouble , georgie .Aurthur and Gwen are still OK. It is a very light mist here this morning makes a change from the heat. I haven't got in contact with D from Gero to find out what breeds he lost.

I would have thought that the darker birds would suffer more from the heat. May be you should stick with dark australorps.

My NH cockerels are finally crowing. It is so nice to hear them crowing. I really miss that sound.
