As you all know I looked after the school chickens last year. Finished year 12 last year but i had become too attached to the 5 of them so said i would stay on as "chicken man" and look after my girls over the school holidays. I got a panic phone call from one of the teachers last friday saying she couldn't find any of the chickens...Knowing that my babies could potentially be in danger i raced down along with my mum and brother. After searching for about half and hour we finally found them....
3 dead, 1 seriously injured...but we were still one missing.
After convincing myself the same had happened, distraught i bagged the two dead ones and put the maimed one into a carrier cage. As we were surveying the ditch for one last time we found her, the last one! I chucked her into the carrier and sped of to the vets. Being a vet nurse i deal with emergencies a lot, never thought i would be the one bringing them in though!! After rushing the two survivors into theatre the call was made to Euthanise the maimed one. It had to be one of the hardest things I've done in a long time, even though i kept telling myself "its just a chicken!".
The other one survived, it is in my back garden now the little trooper. Even on medication it "rules the roost" here; waking the neighbours up at 6 and parading round as if it has lived here all its life! Unfortunately we kind keep her. Living in a residential area with two cats and a Dalmatian really isn't great chicken material....
I never really thought how i attached i would become to them...
