Hi Guys, went down to lock my chooks away tonight and found one of my hens dead, they have been out all day and a hawk was around but I don't think it was that. She was actually in the run, on her back feet curled up and beak to her chest, I took a photo but can't get it off my phone, anyway she had no external wounds. I did however find her last week cowering under the feeder, so I picked her up and alot of fluid came out of her mouth I gently shook her and more came out then she just went off into the coop and has been fine ever since, until today that is, any ideas all my other chooks look fine.

Hi Trev, I had another dead chook yesterday and her crop was empty I'm hoping it's nothing too sinister

if you think this is something sinister killing your chooks you should take it to a vet for a post mortem to put your mind at ease.

This might seem a little strange but rats wee on EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME this spreads selminela wich kills chickens. They wee on food and water mice dont seem to have this affect but rats do. we lost chickens evey time we stop killing the rats. We examined the dead hens plucked and no bites or anything. Hope this helps

better set some rat traps ...sounds wierd like your chooks have been eating redbacks or something, well if u pluked the dead chooks and no bite marks then its got to be something they eat, cant be whiteant treatment around the house because all chooks would have been affected. possibly cutting out the livers of the chikens would reveal the problem, if the liver is anything but a healthy dark pink then its some kind of poison

Hi new2chooks I lost a turkey chick today the same thing it was great and then dead and again its crop was empty nothing in it at all I am sure that hens for some reason just give up but always there crop is empty its a strange one I doubt we will ever get to the bottom of it unless you have a load of money and you desperately want to know its a hard one but the cost of a new chook is a lot less Trev

set some rat traps cause the baits will leave a dead rat around the house...most probly eat the bait and crawl into your roof where u cant get to it, nothing worth than a dead rat in the roof
