Hi Guys, I recently bought some more Muscovy Ducks from the Mundijong Poultry Auction and a couple of them have underdeveloped wings like the one pictured below Apart from the wings the birds are fully feathered, it was not until they flapped their wings when I released them that I noticed the problem, any ideas. Thanks

Hi New2Chooks
I breed muscovies here in Bassendean. From my experience Males tend to develop their wing feathers a lot slower than the rest of the feathers on their body. From the look of the feathers on the birds body it looks like there is still a fair bit of down left for the bird to grow out of. Just by looking at the pic you have posted the bird looks like it could be up to around the 12 week old age. Do you know how old they are? Also do you have pictures of their full body? I hope that this helps any. Cheers Terry

Hi, So great to hear that Katherine is doing well. By the size of the arrow pointing duck it looks like it could be a male as it looks larger than the other ducks and still looks like he has a bit of down left on him. Males grow their feathers (especially their wing feathers) a lot slower than the females and this makes their wings look under developed. You have picked up some pretty white Mussies there. I am hand raising 7 (3 male & 4 Female) approx 20 wk ols ducks from last year and love my pieds they are so colourful. Good luck with the angel wing, I haven't had that problem yet. I hope my answers have helped you out a little. I wouldn't be too worried as I think that is is a Male and he will grow into his wings. My 3 boys only in the last 5 weeks or so have finished fully growing their wing feathers. Terry www.bassomussiesandsilversussex.webs.com
