This is the first game chicks x I have hatched Cornish / Indian game with Sussex hens not bad for the first time with the cross breed Sussex and Cornish this should give me the large breast I wanted my next step is to get them into the oven in 16 weeks and not 38 weeks watch this space. They are robust chicks and full of life. I put 20 eggs in the bator lamped them found 2 no good, hatched out 14 alive, and three passed on, leaving me 11 and 4 not hatched as yet I will leave them for a day or so just in case Trev

good job Trev, they are healthy looking. Isn't the colour variation nice, it'll be interesting to see how they turn out - in looks and taste!

HI Guys Thanks for the comments I love the colours but I was on the net doing research on meat birds the other day and they tell you that all the birds should be white !!!!!!! they also say they use Malay in the breeding so I have a few crosses to go yet or if this lot fill my expectations I will leave them all alone only time will tell. personally I like the different colours Trev

Hi Trev,
good luck with the chicks. Why do meat birds have to be white? Is it because that is what we are use to? Because white feathers are more versatile than coloured feathers for other uses (like white wool)? Or perhaps if you served a chicken with a skin colour other than white people wouldn't be so accepting of it? Personally I don't see what colour has to do with meat production, especially if it's for your own table. Let us know how they turn out. I like the coloured birds too.
Cheers.

HI Bootstrap I had no idea about the white birds until I started to research, this they say if your crosses are correct you will end up with white birds, as they have all over the world "commercially that is" you see how the colour of the progeny I have turned out. I gave a mate one of the big Cornish birds to play with he also put him across the Light Sussex hens but all the hatchings were all "BLACK" with just a tiny bit of white on the under side of the chick the roo was the same colour as one I have. I have taken one home and put it in with the ones I have hatched to see what happens in the long run . The next step I have is to cross this first cross with Malay game and then breed from that cross and then they should all be white. We will see I find that bit hard, but you never know what your going to get when you start to breed for a set propose you will always get a through back that's what makes it interesting I do not care what the end colour is its an indication of staying on track Trev

Fascinating thread Trev. There is something about a white bird that is attractive although red and black is also a favourite. I was interested in that little feeder you had for the chicks and will have to get one. ALso, what do you use as litter? Mike
