Well, we have started to build our coop as we decided buying a new one was way too expensive! The frame has been done and hubby is off tomorrow to get some colourbond and some wire. Photo's of your chicken coops / runs would be sooooo much appreciated to get some ideas! Any ideas Especially photo's of nesting boxes etc. This will help us have happy chooks - which will be arriving in approx. 5 weeks! Thankyou so much for your help, I look forward to seeing all the coops around Perth!

HI Fluffychook Do you have a perch for your silkys to rest upon !!! I was always told that they would never roost up hence I have nothing in there for them to get up the floor. if they do roost I will have to get my pens sorted out for them. The light, is that your brooder house I love this site you always learn stuff Trev

Yes Trev I do have roosts for them, between the milk crates is a low rail, they look brown in the pictures. I find most of them roost, it is mainly the young ones that don't. If they don't roost on the rails I try to train them for about a month, if after that time they still persist in being on the floor, I leave them to it. I prefer them to roost otherwise they sit in poop or get pooped on from above. They are also pretty low. And yes the light is my brooder shed, it is on a thermostat so during the warmer days the lights go off as they are usually outside anyway. Also if I am out and the weather suddenly cools they have access to warmth and I don't have to worry. Best thing I ever bought. It is a reptile light and I bought it off ebay.

I also have a low roost in my silkie coop Trev, they all use it and some of them even go right up ontop of a little house I have in there, so they love somewhere to roost at night..

I have recently built a laying box for my silkies and it has 2 ladders at the front about 1 metre high. At first they wouldn't climb the ladder to get up into the box but with a bit of coaxing and some treats at the top they started to go up there after about a week of me training them and now they really love it...
