Hi I live in East Fremantle and am doing research and preparation for my plunge into the world of backyard chook ownership. I am in the process of trying to decide how many chickens, breeds, whether i get them as babies, and how the hell i'm going to put a decent comfortable coop together I have vege plots and am trying to become a little more self sufficient so thats where the chooks come in plus my 18th month year old boy will love them, he loves all animals! .I think that interaction with animals is very important. I'll be bugging you guys with a lot of questions but sooner later I have to take the plunge and learn along the way. Cheers Adrian ;D

Welcome Adrian, you will never regret having poultry. They not only provide hours of amusement, but are also great pets and with a bonus of eggs. Bring on all your questions and remember the only stupid question is the question not asked.

Thanks heaps for the welcome. ;DYes, I can’t wait to get started. Im sort of hesitant to take the plunge because I want to be sure that I give them a good start and lots of space and good food. I think when my son sees the chicks, he will go bananas cause he loves animals almost as much as me. He’s only 18 months and calls chickens dogs. I’ll be posting heaps of questions over the coming days but in the end i will have to take the plunge and get some chicks whilst i build the coop. Cheers Ado

Hello and welcome! If you're worried about space for your chookies, maybe get some bantams? Good luck with choosing - there are soooo many lovely chooks out there it makes it really hard to pick one breed! ;D Looking forward to seeing what you pick!

Hi Adrian, I have had a thought in the pages of this site not to long ago there was a bit on making your own chook house from pallets they cam out very well have a look at that it will give you a good idea failing that a cheap shed and a small door so they can get out into the run and they will clean up your veggie patch for you when you let them out inexpensive to do but works well Trev

sure you will enjoy , only thing i would recomend is getting chicks so they get used to being hand held if that is what you want for the little bloke. I have silkies aracaunas and pekin bantams 7 all up and and some breeds are very friendly eg silkie but only produce small eggs araucana have colured egg (green or blue shell )but pekin bantams which I have recently got are small and really good looking chickens . I have 3 young children and they love all of them.the other people on this site have a huge amount of experience and good advice. goodluck!!!
