Hi folks, great to find you here!! I'm brand new to chook keeping but have been really keen to give it a go. Here's where I'm up to so far. I will have a good rummage around on the forum and try to read up on what is here before I annoy you with too many questions. Thanks for your patience (in advance!). WHERE? - I'm in Kalamunda shire, Perth Hills. CHOOK HOUSE? - well, it's small house with a run and is nearly finished. CHOOKS - not yet but would like 3 or 4 gals to start (max). WHAT BREED? - I don't know much about breeds so I'll research that and also see what's available to buy. ANY EXPERIENCE? - nope. ;D As a kid we had chooks in the backyard but I was small and my job was to deliver the kitchen vege scraps. Spent ages watching them though. WHY CHOOKS? - good company, great eggs!!! That's all for now. See you around the boards no doubt

Hello and welcome! ;D Don't worry, once you find your new chooks you'll spend heaps of time watching them again! They're terrible time wasters!

Hi weeza, it's nice to have another Kalamunda person here, there is a few of us now. Love to see some pics of your girls once you've worked out which breed you'd like.

Hi weeza and welcome, I too am in Kalamunda, a great place to live too. Good luck with choosing your breed, there are so many and you will love them all, but there will be something about one that really gets you each time and that will be the one you go with. For me that was Silkies, but there are so many more breeds I would love to have too....alas....a bigger property in the country I think.

Hi Weeza,
I am currently waiting on eggs to hatch (due the 23rd) and they will be the start of my new foray into keeping chickens again. i used to have a couple of Rhode Island Reds and a lovely rooster but had to give them up when we moved. Now we are well settled again it is time to get back into keeping chooks. I couldn't make up[ my mind which breed to get this time and so decided on 2 dozen fertile eggs of 4 breeds. Am currently waiting on Barnevelders, Buff Sussex, Welsummers and Bovan Goldline. unfortunately already we have found that 5 of the eggs were not fertile - 4 were Barnevelders and 1 was a bovan Goldline. Shall be interesting to see what we end up with from the remaining 19 eggs as far as how many are hens? Look forward to hearing about your own foray into keeping chickens once you decide on what to keep.

Hi folks, thanks for the welcome!! I had a laugh at myself when I read this from fluffychook: Good luck with choosing your breed, there are so many and you will love them all, but there will be something about one that really gets you each time and that will be the one you go with. It was just last night I was flicking through a Chook Keeping Book and looking at breeds etc etc. I haven't decided yet but my partner (who has taken some convincing about getting chooks - but is now secretly hooked ;D) tried to persuade me that I should approach the selection of a breed with a bit more thought than the way I pick a horse in the Melbourne Cup. Apparently "I just like the look of that one" and "it's such a lovely colour" didn't seem serious enough. Hilarious ;D. Thanks FluffyChook for the endorsement - I'll go with my hunch I think.

Better late than never, I haven't checked in for awhile... welcome to the forum! I'm just up the road in Lesmurdie.
Let us know what you want your chooks for (eggs, pets, meat, just pretty ones etc) I'm sure plenty of people will have sugestions for you.
:-) Ashley
