I have a bantam hen who seems to be a bit sick. She spends most of her time (day and night) on the perch in the shed and seems to be very hunched up (shortened neck and sunken head). She is also moulting at the moment. When she gets off the perch and into the yard she seems to stand up well and run around as though she is fine. Any suggestions as to how to treat her?

Hi Joe, if I was you, I would worm her asap and get some poultry dust to treat her for lice and mites. Add some bird vitamins to their water to give her an extra boost. What are you feeding her and is she still eating properly-is her crop full at the end of the day? Cheers, Wendy

I agree with Wendy, check also if she is underweight, if so give her some extra protein like canned cat food. Also the rickets diet is a great pick me up too.

A sick bird can often be helped by the Rickets diet. Feed the birds once a day for three days or until you feel the bird is looking and acting better - usually 3 weeks.
This amount feeds one bird. Each serving consists of:
½ to 1 x cooked egg yolk… crumbled into mixture 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil.. 1 very small drizzle of honey 2 x tablespoons natural yoghurt - no sugar 2 to 4 tablespoons rolled oats or Baby rice 1 dessertspoon of beef tin cat food…… Not dog food A few grains of multi vitamin powder 2 tablespoons of grated apple.. Mix to make a crumble mixture not runny, if you have to roll into pellets and force feed, and then gently massage the neck in a downward motion to get it down into the crop, then do it, the bird may be too weak to eat or have lost the desire to eat….
Always have fresh clean water available at all time for the bird and good quality food Feed the rickets diet in the morning. Also have her ordinary feed and fresh clean water available at all times: if it has not been fully eaten with in 12 hours throw it out... make another one the next morning.. don't add to it.. clean out the dish it was in also before adding the new mixture.

Thanks for the advice. I have been feeding her wheat along with a few scraps. I checked her crop last night and it was fairly full. I treated her with poultry dust and wormed her. I had no vitamins, etc so i gave her a mix if wheat, layer pellets and starter crumbles as I thought these would have most of the essential vitamins. Will wait and see how she goes now.

She seems to be much better. She is getting off the perch more and is not so pale now. She is also standing up tall and generally looks a lot better. Thanks for the advice.
