I was told this morning, by a poultry judge, that if you put (Mareks) vaccinated birds in with unvaccinated birds, you stand the chance of infecting your whole flock with Mareks. As the vaccinated birds carry the virus. I was stunned and horrified, as a lot of people I know have bought in rescued battery chooks and put in with their unvaccinated birds. She said, you are likely to have a really healthy flock without vaccinating. Does anyone know if this is true?

I find it hard to believe as the idea of vaccine it to build immunity to the small amount given .The vaccine is actually made with an "attenuated virus" which is a non transferable form of the original viral strain! :oIf that was the case ,we would all adults ,pets and children alike would be carrying around live viruses for the diseases we have been immunized against and that is definitely not the case. I may be wrong as I have heard this before but the outbreaks of Merak's are not huge and the number of people who have both vaccinated and non-vaccinated birds together is massive. I try to breed healthy strong birds that are resilient to Merak's and alot of bachyard flocks and breeders are doing just that . We as naturopaths /homeopaths are a little anti vaccines anyway and we can make homeopathic's for most conditions (lucky us) ;D ;D

if you put vaccinated bird with unvaccinated bird you are indeed putting your unvaccinated flock at risk. annie makes a valid arguement against this but all the arguements i have heard = DO NOT MIX VACCINATED with non vaccinated birds when mareks is the case in point. perhaps this is because mareks can be passed on in the dander of the fowl

I have tried to find out the whole story about the reasons for this vaccination /non-vaccination chook problem It is not my area of expertise and hard to get accurate information . I did some research and I spoke too a vet colleague of ours who had some Idea and another vet patient of ours who didn't know much about it .It seems to be an area not all know lots about !! I'm told the Marek's vaccine is actually non threatening turkey Marek's, not chicken and is used something like the cowpox was used for smallpox . .They didn't know if this is a live virus or a "attenuated virus".I am assuming that this is live where there is a problem as if it is live Turkey Mareks virus it could pass on to other fowl. This is how it has been explained to me. I couldn't find any documented evidence (nor could the vets)as to the-- for's or against combining both types of birds ,no doubt there is some. It was suggested however that you run a turkey with un-vaccinated flocks to raise natural immunity The vaccination does not prevent Marek's, it prevents the formation of the lesions that cause the damage. Even with the vaccine the chickens can get chicken Marek's, they just will not be harmed by it. I hope this is accurate and if anyone on line is a vet who knows more I would love some more accurate information . This is not my info just what I was told and found ! I still intend to run both together as I have some Hi-lines and I hope they will strengthen my flock .I may invite a turkey to stay
