Maybe someone has seen this before...my mum was here on the weekend and she says some of her black silky hens have developed scabs on their faces and over their eyes too??? One bird died. She is bathing the scabs, especially those over the eyes and putting a little betadine in their water....the scabs look a bit like a cold sore. Has anyone seen this sort of thing before? What would you recommend as a remedy. It doesnt appear to be contageous as only a few hens are suffering.

it sounds like fowl pox, which is spread by mosquito bites. the virus that causes it is in the same family as cold sores (herpes) so that is a good description. there is a wet form and a dry form, with the wet form tending to be more fatal than the dry form. in the wet form the sores also form inside the throat of the bird(to oversimplify it). the dry form tends to be concentrated mainlyon the face and combs, and some scarring can be present afterwards. bathing is the best thing you could be doing.
