Sorry to hear about everyones problems with foxes. While my dream is to beon some property out of town, thats one thing I dont have to worry about here. Crows and hawks and neighbours cats are my predators.
Pianochook, that pen is lovely. You should be really proud of youself.

thanks, everyone I am very happy how it turned out, because when I spotted it only I could see it's potential, and it has been an eye saw for about a year But the best thing is, now that the garage is getting clearer (today I turned the old aviary into a shed for my chook stuff ) I can go and get MORE things from the cleanup! That's the secret, ikbokchook, you need to create some space so you can store more things, at least that's how I convince my better half... Mandimoo, good luck tonight fox hunting! Up to what age of the chooks are the crows and hawks a danger? I'm just wondering when I can let them out to freerange without loosing them in the first 5 minutes

Good luck tonight Mandimoo!
Martina, I quite often pop my Pekin or Silkie chickies out into an open pen at 8-10wks and the crow dont seem to care less about them. And I have more than my fair share of crows out here, some days they collect more eggs than I do! So I wouldnt imagine that your gals will be bothered too much by the crows but hawks are a different story. They will quite happily take a banty and have heard of them taking large chooks. Just try to make sure that they've got a few places to hide around your backyard if something is hovering overhead. Thats when roosters are really worth their weight as they will spot hawks etc and warn all their ladies, calling them undercover and not letting them venture out until the danger has passed.

thanks, Steph, that's great to know There are lots of shrubs and trees in my garden, so it should be easy for them to hide. I can see my light sussex taking the role of the rooster, she is talking ALL day anyway, I sometimes think she's a zebra finch dressed up as a chicken, and she is very alert, so I'm sure she would spot a hawk. I was a bit worried how to get them back into the coop, but I reckon if I just spelled the word "zucchini" they'd come flying, literally gee, I love my chooks ;D

Hello to all Fox haters, 3 weeks ago I fiished my fences around our large block near Byford, i t is cyclone mesh. so having an outer run ( veggie patch ) with barbed wirer top and bottom i ! thourght ! I would be safe by leaving the gate to the main house pen open + the rasied house door for the 1st and final time so to allow the mixed clan of hens and one roster to let them selves up as I had to go to work realy early on this Saturday. then I got the phone call from the wife, out of 21 chickens I HAVE 4 CHICKERNS UNDER 1 MONTH AND 4 HENS LEFT. so never again will i leave the gate open thinking 3 years have no no problems with foxs yeh right. so now to replace them.

Hi everyone. I hadn't realised there were so many people with the same fox problem as me. Just last night I was woken up by my large Isa brown rooster and when I ran out there a fox had him pinned to the side of the coop from the outside. It had its paw thru the wire and was holding him against the side and chewing his poor little leg. Then as I approached the coop the fox let go and the rooster flew right over the top of the 8 foot high coop and out into the paddock. Even though I tried to catch him, he was so panicked and ran straight to the fox and I had to hear him being killed. It is so heartbreaking, we are all so attatched to our chookies.
