I lost one of my chickens yesterday - 'Effie' my coronation sussex:( She didn't have any symptoms or look sick, just found her dead in the coop.
Some of the other chickens do have mild cold like symptoms though, a bit rattly breathing (like phleghmy), only noticeable the other night when I was out there well after dark and they were all in the coop, but on closer inspection a couple have a mild discharge on their beaks:(
They are all eating, drinking and behaving normal (although have gone off the lay, but it has been really hot out here), can anyone suggest what is wrong with them, and what I need to get to fix them (assuming Effies death is related?)
I did get new chickens a few weeks ago - ex-battery hens that I felt sorry for, but maybe they have bought a disease in:(
I'm in the country, so may need to order or travel to get medicine, so any natural remedy/suggestions that could help for a few days would also be appreciated.
Thanks
Michelle

Hi Michelle sounds like Respitory desease...best you get some antibiotics for them from a vet or livestock produce store...Some of the members here should be able to suggest the best brands. Change in wheather can often bring on a bout or maybe the new chooks were infectious.
It's always a good idea to keep new birds quarantined for a few weeks efore introducing them to your flock
Hope they get better soon
cheers

Hi Michelle, do you worm your chooks regularly and treat for external parasites like lice? It could also be this as you mentioned you didnt notice any symptoms. Some of my chooks had a respiratory disease and you could tell because they were wheezing and sneezing coughing etc. You need to intestinal worms and heartworm. It is usual to do it 3 or 4 times per year. If you use Moxidectin Plus, this treats most parasites both inside and out with the one product. Cheers, Wendy

Some of mine too have slight colds. If the discharge is clear then it is viral and antibiotics will not help, if they have secondary infection then use the antibiotics. For a cold I just monitor them and if necessary give some Soluvet plus or some extra treats to give them a boost. Last summer I had one rooster who had a cold all the time. Just a runny nose (beak...lol) with a bit of a rattle in his chest. Cooler weather came and it cleared up.

If you want to try some natural treatments garlic is a natural antibiotic ,can be feed chopped or mix with raw honey (another natural anti biotic) and mixed with mash .I make a honey garlic mix that I keep ad use when required .It gets more effective the longer it sits. The other thing I use with colds is colloidal silver .I spray it around (It kills most bugs )and the chooks breath it in . I also add it to there water Its a great product ,stops cross infection also .What Wendy said about worms is true there are particular parasites(one realy nasty one ) that will get into the poultry's lungs an cause cold like symptom's ,Also head shaking if they ever do that.I use Herb mix for parasites but all are good. If you cant be bothered chopping garlic -dried garlic crumbles from the herb counter or the stock food shops ,sold in bulk works just fine(also good to keep worms down but not strong enough if you have a infestation and wont touch gape worm that gets into the throat.)

Hi Tina, you can buy a colloidial silver generator, not sure where though. My dad gave me one years ago. It comes with instructions. You sit it in water and it releases an amount of silver into the water. You could maybe try the health food shop to buy the ready made stuff. Anne may have a supplier. Cheers, Wendy

We get ours for our patients through our clinic .Wendys right you can get a generator ,We have one and you can make it with distilled water ( ours came from the USA.) .Ross Says you can make a generator with 2-4 nine volt batteries and silver .He has made them in the past for a couple of friends details on the net,he says its easy but besides being a homeopath hes also an engineer so Id take that with a pinch of salt. .Most important is to use 99.999% pure silver.for the process purity is all important . You can also buy collodial silver sometimes at the markets ,sometimes at stock food places and all health food shops . I use ours when I get round to making it (very cheap)and sometimes bought product .also there is a company making Ionic silver that works as well but more reasonable priced, cant remember the brand name .(might be Hydrosan) Fantastic product. I use it alot with chooks and especially sick chicks . I spray my incubators and eggs with it also . Its great for fungal infections and any wound.

Thanks everyone for the responses, I've tried to get antibiotics and moxi + here with no success so will need to make a trip to a bigger town (unless chickens can be dosed with horse, sheep or goat paste wormer that is ivermectin or moxidectin based - I'll assume not unless someone advised me differently) so will start on the garlic and honey for a few days until I can get proper chicken meds.
