I still can't believe it, we FINALLY went and got my chicks! Of course the timing was not really the best, I should have done the shopping first but I just did not want to wait any longer. Now I've got 3 4to5 week old chicks (1 light Sussex, 1 buff Sussex and 1 Barnevelder) cheeping away next to the washing machine - I was worried they'd be too cold, so I did give them a light and took them in. I think I will worry until they are fully grown, they do the strangest things! They were used to woodshavings, so I went and got some, only to find, they seem to eat them! Same with the newspaper I had in before, as soon as it was a little soggy they started picking it. Apart from that they have already settled in, started grooming themselves and the others (they do that just like parrots, I never expected that!), eating and drinking well. But I just can't get over it how tame they are! I can pick them all up, no problem, they happily snuggle up and try to hide under my hair - again, I know this behaviour from parrots, never thought chicken would do the same. Sorry, guys, I'm just so excited and happy, I just had to waffle on ;D I feel like a little kid having the best christmas EVER (after all that party stuff I'll sort out the picture business and try to post some pics...)

thanks, Shea and Beck, I am still over the moon - finally I feel worthy of being a member of a chicken forum All three of them start to show very different character, it's so much fun already! I will need to set up a predator proof run tomorrow, so I don't have to lock them inside every time I leave the house... The Barnevelder has a very light color head, is that just the baby feathers? Here we go, I hope it works:

Thanks, guys it's nice to share the excitement! I build them a temporary run to move around on the grass out of the old play pen, they go absolutely mad picking and scratching. Yesterday I put the pen under a tree and they nearly dug under because they found a ants nest

it is very handy, and I used reusable cable ties, so I can dismantle it and fold it up, if I don't need it.
