One of my hens is clucky and I'm seriously cosidering putting some pekin or indian runner eggs under her.
I've got plenty of room in the chicken house for 3-4 ducks to share it but I'm a bit worried about how suitable my backyard is for them. We're in the hills and our yard has quite a slope, there are a few steps around the place and a retaining wall about 1m tall (with steps going up one side). Will the ducks be able to get up and down the stairs ok and are they smart enough to go up the stairs to get up the retaining wall, or will they get stuck at the bottom?
Thanks
Ash

Hi Ashley,Good for you getting ducks!! It really depends on how high the steps are. My Pekins are able to navigate low to medium steps. I was surprised with where they can actually get to. Cheers, Wendy

Thanks Wendy, I might have to do a bit of ground work before I get them... some of the steps are quite big (30cm) and I don't want them getting stuck!

Hi Ashley, I have the same problem where I am, and I have steps that are around the same size as yours, my bantam mallard ducks manage them ok, sometimes they struggle a little but it's amazing just how high a duck can jump. Larger breeds like the Pekins and the Indian Runners should be ok with that size step, ducks are pretty clever creatures, if they can't get up the steps, they will just find another way of getting up there
