A slow start to this season. First gold laced Mum hatched 7 of her 12 and second only 3. I checked the failed eggs and found most unfertilised so suspicion must fall on the rooster, who is about three years old and should still be up to it. I have started a younger rooster with a couple of my better hens in a separate pen and will see if he does better. Meanwhile my grey frizzle Mum has three chicks, two of which are frizzle and one not, the dark grey frizzle Mum has two and my good old silkie cross has five, of which one is white like her and may become my next generation of Mums in that line (I've had great grandma, grandma, Mum and now my current Mum) I only gave her and the frizzles a few eggs to sit on as I wasn't sure what they would produce. The rooster is Fritz, who is still the fightingest chook I have ever met, and my leg has the scars to prove it.

Hey Mike glad to have you back, where you been, busy I 'spose. You would of thought a 3 year old would be up to it still, but still using a younger one and getting better results tells a lot. I read recently that the more aggressive the rooster the more fertile they are, 'hormones'....lol Would love to see some pictures of your brood if you have time.
