Just wondering if anyone knows of these within australia? Ive been chasing them since i stumbled across a pic of them - someone said that they thought someone in QLD had some??? I know you can buy them in the US but im pretty sure they cant be brought into austraila as poultry doesnt qualify under birds as pets & i think you can only bring birds in from NZ anyway!
Just an update I contacted Leigh Valentine at the International Wildlife Trade ,ept. of Environment, Water, Heritage & the Arts regarding bringing the white mandarins into australia, she was very helful & i got lots of info, basically they are not here & they are not on the list of approved species to come here either with or without a permit so if we really wanted them we could apply to have them added to the list here is a quote of her reply :
Thank you for your enquiry regarding the import of White Mandarin Ducks into Australia.
The import of live animals into Australia is controlled by the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), administered by the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) and the Quarantine Act 1908, administered by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS). You will require an import permit from both DEWHA and AQIS in order to import a live animal. I can provide you with information regarding DEWHA’s procedures.
I suggest you also contact AQIS regarding their requirements for live import. AQIS Live Animal Imports can be contacted by phone on (02) 6272 4454 or by email at email@example.com. They will be able to answer your questions regarding any restrictions and conditions they currently have in place.
From our Department, under the EPBC Act, the only specimens that can be imported live into the country are those appearing on a list of approved specimens. The list of the species that are currently approved can be found at www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/trade-use/lists/import/pubs/live-import-list.pdf. This list is made up of 2 sections, Part A are those species that do not require a permit from this Department and Part B are those species that will require a permit from this Department. If a species does not appear on the list they are not permitted to be imported under any circumstances.
The White Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) is not currently listed as an approved species for import and as such is prohibited entry into Australia. Should you wish to apply to have this species considered for inclusion on the live import list please refer to our website for further instructions - www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/trade-use/lists/import/amend/index.htm "
I may have a look into it later on, sounds like alot of hard work just to get them on the list! but id say it would be worth it.
Is anyone else interested in getting some if we were to apply & eventually get them on the import list? I think id have a better chance of getting them sent here if we had a few to be sent. Id want to get them from teh shortest didtance away for less stress on them & i think after last times efforts of getting the normal mandarins here from over east this time id ask for a photo of how they were to be transpoted so they diddnt try to stuff 8 ducks into a tiny half bread crate!!!!!
