Hi all I had some new arrivals today. I stuck a few pekin eggs and a couple of frizzle and a couple of the buff silkie cross eggs under a broody 3 weeks ago and today 4 or 5 hatched. Unfortunately I also had some losses. 2 hatched with unclosed belly buttons and I found them dead. That's the first time I had seen that. I was horrible. 1 just totally dissapeared. found a shell but no chick and then when I got home tonite the were 2 little chicks. 1 light grey which I think is one of the pekins as it is tiny and similar colour to the blue roo and one little buff coloured chick . I guess from the Buff Silkie. she still has 2 more eggs so I will check again in the morning.

This little Hen usually does a good job for the first 2 -3 weeks then she gets bored but by then the little ones are usually OK looking after them selves. Also I have a Frizzle roo that has turned out to be very interested in the little chicks and keeps helping the Hen out which is odd so I will love to see how long that lasts. He does a Mummy imitation with all the noises the hen makes and scratching round letting the chicks know when he finds something yummy for them to eat and also ruffles up and spreads his wings and growls like the hen does when any other chook gets too close
