Hello Dylan, that is bad news about your chookens, if you can list any symptoms and what their poops are like maybe a member might be able to help you

Hi everyone, Dylan is actually my 9 year old son, just incase some of you could see that his avatar is a photo of the chicks I posted a couple of weeks back! It is very strange what has happened to our birds, they where fine at bedtime last night, no sign of illness, they were walking normally they had their wings weren't droopy, but this morning our big silkie the father of our 2 chicks, and our peahen had died, also our mallard drake was dragging his body along the ground to get the the food, but after about 10 mins he just got up and started walking normal again, and now our little blue silky rooster which Fluffychook gave us, was just sitting on his own hunched in the corner not eating or drinking, so I have isolated him with food & water, and put him in a dry warm place, so I'll just see how he is tonight when I get home. First thing that i did was check there poop but everything look normal there, nothing has changed in there diet, so it's got me stumped! I just hope that we don't lose anymore

You have done the right thing by isolating, I have also lost a couple of young ones, 2 nights ago, they were about 8 weeks old, same thing, happy chappys the night before, and then bamm, gone in the morning, BUT I had turned off the heater a couple of nights prior to this and I think in my case it was the cold that got them as it had dropped down to about 6 degrees and they werent acclimatized to this. but still have put them on a course of sulpha quin and probotics and turned the heaters back on so hopefully that will fix my problem, maybe it is the same problem with yours that they werent acclimatized to the cold weather and maydo do they same as i am, sulpha quin and probotics, but good luck

Thanks, H7, I had a feeling that the sudden cold temp was too blame , Most of the time all our chooks roost on perches, but the last couple of nights they haven't done so, they just huddle in a group to stay warm, but i have noticed that in the early evening ther might be one or two on there own, but usually come night time they have joined the group, I wonder if at some stage overnight they have wondered of again and then the cold has got them? I hope that the rest is ok, I might give them an huge pile of hay to use aswell, fingers crossed.

sad news Brendan and Dylan. I hope the rest are ok....Definately get some sulpha quin and probotics into them and a big pile of hay sounds like a good idea. Does the coop get very drafty...that could also be a problem. You could try making a little hale bale house inside the coop for extra warmth and protection from drafts which is what a tend to do once it's starts getting a little colder at night....Mind you have not done mine yet this year so I will have to get a wriggle on and make sure they are done before I go away in a few weeks
Good luck

have you checked that nothing has died in their water causing botulism?
it is most distressing when birds just seem to die for no reason, i hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

Great to have you on the forum Dylan, I do hope you find out what is wrong with your chickens. It is a pity they can't talk, it would make treating them so much easier.
