hi, just want to get some ideas & thoughts about my chook run..... we have built a run that is 14m long by 2.5m wide & 1.8 high ... allthough we may have to extend it & seperate becuase I brought a pair of Golden pheasants today & Im going to pick up a yound lady amherst rooster tomorow & I dont think they can go together right?? I was just going to get 2 rooster birds becuase they are stunning & not have any females so they wouldnt fight but the guy selling the goldens will only sell them as a pair... ( for $120 is that normal? ) Eventually I want a pair of madarin ducks & some chooks too - n Will they all go in together? I have a kiddie pool with both sides in the ground as a pond - fully planted with water plants for them to hide in..... I have a few small trees & a few roof hight trees & lots of grassey shrubs in there & of course lots of natural branches for them to perch - i am thinking of dividing it but becuase i dont want the 2 pheasant cocks to fight - if i only have them & no females they would be ok but is that right?? Is there anything i have missed or I should/shouldnt have in there?? Im a newbie to all this - i have alot of birds but not poultry...... thanks!

Hi chel & trev Sounds like the setup you have is ideal for the mandarins, you will have to divide it though as they don't like being with any other animals, they are very shy birds and if you would like to breed them, then they are best kept on there own with very little interaction and plenty of hiding places, ( which it sounds like you have ample ) and before you know it you'll have baby Mandarin ducks which if they are good quality can sell for around $100 per duckling I've put a post in the duck section of this site with some info on obtaining a breeding pair of Mandarins from a breeder over east, let me know if your interested. Thanks

Hi Chell and Trev. I don't know much about Duck's but luv4ducks advice sounds about right. As far as Pheasants go I would imagine they would be a bit like chooks, fine while it is just all males together but put any girls into the mix and there could be some dramas. I keep chooks and geese at the moment and I keep the geese seperate due to the mess they make. 1 with very messy wet droppings and 2 they can make a real mess of any water features/ponds. I don't know whether ducks would be the same maybe luv4ducks would be able to answer that one

drakes are pretty easy going, they will get along most of the time, but like you said lakelands, put a girl in there and they will fight to the death! Not all males are like this, just like people they have different attitudes and personalities, and some drakes just get along fine, I currently have 2 drakes and 1 duck shearing a pen at the moment, without any problems, but then I also have 2 drakes that can see each other through an adjoining mesh panel, and if they ever got together then there would be problems. It really is just a matter of try it and see, but you have to supervise the first couple of hours, and always have a backup plan if it all goes wrong. I hope this helps !!
