Hello We've 3 lovely ladies - I. Browns. One (not sure which one yet) is laying a perfect eggs but two eggs have had some blood smears on it. Have checked over all ladies all look fine, eating, drinking and scratching v. happily but it has been v. hot and humid. Any ideas? or just normal. Only thing of note its a white egg, the other two lay brownish, speck eggs and a little smaller so we can narrow it down if the lady is in dire straits. Many thanks

Hi 3chookens I am sure someone will be answer your question but maybe some more ifo would be useful. Are they young hens just starting to lay or older girls. I know that when my pullets lay their 1st few eggs the get blood smears...and that's quite normal

Like Lakelands i have had young pullets that will sometimes lay their first eggs with the odd blood smear.I have always considered this to be normal. But not if the bleeding was heavy or go on for to long.

3chookens Of the 300 layer chickens we have at Cunderdin Ag, it is quite common to have blood smears on the eggs at any time of year, and it can be on any egg colour. All our chickens are Isa Browns. I have never observed any illness or losses related to blood smears. Dont think you have anything to worry about Just make sure the diet is correct and they dont have any internal parasites and you should be right

If you want to find out who is laying the smeared eggs, put dye on their vent area. I have never tried it but I have read it works a treat.

you are so right 3chookens...this site is both informative and entertaining. We have some budding commedians, story tellers (authors), educators and cynics? (also some some terrible spellers and typists aka me) LOL
