Nothing much to report yet I'm afraid. I quickly listened to the eggs again this evening while mumma chook had her dinner and the one egg is still pipping, couldnt hear anything in the other eggs yet. Will check mumma chook again when I go out to put everyone to bed shortly

I feel barren ....Only eggs I have at them moment are soem peking banties, but they are the 1st eggs she has laid....do you know how long you would need to wait before they would be mature enough to set....Haven't had any luck with posted ones soooo getting seperate to get something in the bater....

Interesting you should ask Carolyn, I have just been looking it up myself. BYP person is doing an experiment to see what happens. They used a newly laying pullet and an older hen to compare. As the newly laying pullets eggs are smaller there was the obvious size difference when they hatched. Some comments have been that the little chick will catch up size quickly. Some are saying they will always be small. I am seeing what happens in my own backyard as I have a newly laying hen who has been romanced by the rooster for a couple of weeks before she started laying. I put one of her eggs in the incubator and have marked the shell to let me know which one it is. So if your pekin bantam has been with a rooster, maybe you could give a few a go in the incubator and see what happens.

Well let me know how yours go. I have had the hen in with 2 juvenile roos. I haven't seen any romancing yet but that's not to say there hasn't been any hanky panky. My other bantums have still got a few chicks in tow so she is all alone with the roosters at the moment. Actually the faverolle roo is in there too but he is definately too young to play yet. He's not even crowing yet that i've heard. The only other eggs that I have at them moment are coming from my cross breeds and I promised myself that I would not put any more in the bater and just stick to the pure breeds now that I have some unfortunately none of the blighters are laying any eggs or the rooster s are too young ....grrr can't wait till next season. Meantime I am going to put some adds out there for soem fertile eggs but me thinks a bit late in the season now.

Alot of the Silkie eggs in my last batch were from pullets that had just started laying. Looking at the chicks down in the brooder, I dont see any size difference.
Well, we have our first chickie, finally! Its still wet but looks like a partridge. 4 other chicks are still pipping, with 2 having cracked through the shell. Please be buffs! lol......

Just checked mumma chook while I was putting everyone to bed and theres still just the one chick. I thought it was a pale partridge when it was wet but now that its fluffed up I think it might be a buff, but was quite dark and the torch battery is almost flat so will have to wait til the morning to get a decent look.
