Finished up with 5. One is very small and it seems to have it's eyes closed most of the time, I don't know if it is just very tired from the hatch or something else is its problem. Time will tell. The other 5 eggs I checked to see what the problem was. Two had died around day 19, the other three, two had broken the membrane, but we think the first breath was a wet one. The last one was just full of water so it drowned. I tried to keep water in the bottom of the bator as per manufacturers instructions, but it was obviously too humid for silkie eggs. I am thankful that I got five. All different colours At the same time I was incubating duck eggs, so far one has hatched the others are being slow. Sorry for the bad picture, the little guy is dark coloured not brown

Just gorgeous Shame that you lost the rest but at least as you say, you got all different colours. Is the black/dark blue one bearded? It looks like it is but maybe its just the angle of the piccies. My own eggs are busy pipping and cheeping. One is about half hatched and looks like it will be a white silkie. No movement or pipping as yet from the qld eggs so I might candle them tonight and see whats happening.

I am unsure if it is bearded, It does seem to have a bit more under the chin. With Princess I was only aware she was bearded a few weeks before you took her. So I will watch this one as it grows to see if it is. It would be really fantastic if it is. A bearded blue, woohoo. Looking forward to some of your piccies Steph, I hope your hatch is successful. My other 5 duck eggs are still not peeped, but we candled them and 4 have broken through the membrane, hopefully they will peep soon.

I definately reckon its bearded fluffy, thats the first thing I thought yesterday when I saw the first piccie but I didnt say anything coz I thought maybe it was just the angle of the pic. But after seeing todays piccies I think it is. My splay legged chickie Bessie had exactly the same muffing on the cheeks when she was born. A bearded blue would be awesome. I would be sooo jealous! lol. You've got me all excited now coz I'm thinking maybe one of mine could hatch out bearded So far I've got 3 chickies in the process of hatching, lots of cheeping going on. Theres a few more eggs with the cracks just appearing in the shells so hopefully when I get up in the morning I'll have a few little surprises. Still no action from the qld eggs, I candled them earlier and only 3 of them look like theres something in them but they havent broken through the membrane. But its still early days yet so fingers crossed.

Did you also notice something else, one has yellow legs and the toes are only 4 on some

No, I didnt notice lol. Trust me to see the beard before something as obvious as yellow legs lol Weird... its an interesting colour too, I thought the chicks were only supposed to be either dark blue, light blue or splash. 4 toes is also strange, considering that 5 toes are dominant so even if you cross a Silkie with something else you usually still end up with 5 toes. Maybe a genetic defect? I hope the lil bearded blue isnt one of the 4 toed ones?

aw, bummer. Mind you, it doesnt matter if you're not going to show the bird. On the breeding side of it, I'm no genetics expert but if you crossed that bird to one with 5 toes and 5 being dominant the chicks should have 5 toes?? Well at least maybe some would, with the defect still coming through on others? You should mention to the breeder that some have ended up with 4 toes and one with yellow legs. Did any from your last lot have 4 toes?

Funny thing I read 5 toes was dominant and would you believe I never even looked if the last lot had 4...lol I will go and check them out later. I am going to ask the breeder about the leg colour and bearded, so I might as well ask about the toes. My little tiny silkie is still with us this morning, but I am positive it will not make it. I am giving it some sugar water and trying to get some mash into it, but it is weaker this morning.

Thats a shame, I hope it makes it. Understandable that you wouldnt have checked the feet of the last lot, as we expect that being Silkies they've got the 5 toes. We'll see how many of mine hatch out with 4 toes in a few days time.
