hi all, just went out to check the chicks, they just two days ago where taken out from under the light and into a pen in our yard, and i notice one is just sitting sleeping next to their water dish (which is a shallow plastic container), i walked over and she didnt react the way they do, and just looked at me but didnt move, so i got her out and noticed her chest was a bit wet and she had saliva dribbling from her mouth and was breathing with an open beak. she is now inside on my lounge on a jumper i cleaned up her mouth and put my ear close to her chest to listen to her lungs, there is a small weeze and crackling, i know the crackling must be some fluid on her lungs, its not a lot by the sounds of it, i cant hear it with out putting my ear to her chest. she is flicking a bit more liquid for her mouth. and it just resting, but is becoming more responsive to any noise i make in the house. does anyone have any advice they can give me on anyway to help her out?? what is her survival rate? if its a tiny amount of liquid does she have a better chance, at this point she isnt showing any signs of being in pain or stress, ill be keeping her inside till she is better. i was thinking of taking her to my vet as im a bit concerned about the after affects eg:Pneumonia.

birds have air sacs, , and its possible that your little chick has got respiratory illness rather than water on the lungs. either way its good that you have got her booked into the vet.

hi all i didnt update yesterday, was really tired, vet vist went really well, the vet agrees that its water in there, she was given baytrill (sp) injection, to get her feeling better and get her eating and drinking as well as another med, i forget the name and the paper work is still in the car which she will have for 5days in her water. the vet said she is in excellent condition apart from her little accident, its looking really good she is eating drinking cheeping(which yesterday from 10:20am till 2;40pm she didnt make a noise and slept all the time, she is back in the brooder till i feel good about her being back with the others, she is a little lonley. i think this little girl might have to stay with me as we are very great friends.

hi all an update on my little girl, she is fully recovered, she spent a week back in the brooder and being spoilt in the house, she is now back with her siblings, thank you all so much!! i had a friend laugh at me for taking her to the vet, "you have plenty more dont you?" so now this little lady will be staying here with me.

I love threads like this. We can follow the story of what is happening and learn a lot at the same time which may help us if we encounter a similar situation one day. Congratulations to chickita and the chick. Mike
