I've noticed that Alfie has had funny eyes for a couple of days. He just looks like he's squinting and he's rubbing both his eyes on himself to 'scratch' them. The lids are swollen and it seems to be swollen inside. He seems to be staying in the shade and isn't his usual self eg: not calling the girls when I threw the scraps in. I've had a look at BYP at a thread Ruff put on about eye worms, it doesn't look the same. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas? Shea

his eye is very inflamed and irritated. i had a bird with a similar condition and i took him to the vet and got an ointment which contained antibiotics and steroids for the inflammation. after a few days his eye came back to normal it was the same stuff that is perscribed to cats and dogs with conjunctivitis.
has he had any other signs like coughing or sneezing or wheezing.........he may have a respiratory infection if he is off colour and not paying attention to his ladies and his surroundings.
these things can bring a bird downhill very quickly, so i would suggest a trip to a vet if possible.

Poor Alfie! That looks nasty! Oh, and eye worms!!!??!! EEEKKK! If it is conjunctivitis, I have a friend who swears by cod liver oil (from the chemist, not the stock feeder!) Uses it on her kids/dogs/horses - just a couple of drop in each eye. I've never tried it, but you never know your luck! Good luck!

oooooooooooopppppppppppsssssssss i didn't mean that it was conjunctivitis, its just the same ointment that is used to treat conjunctivitis in cats and dogs, and it really helped alleviate the situation for my boy when he got something that looked similar. poor beggar, i had been treating him with pink-eye powder, as an antibiotic, but the granules were aggravating teh situation

Nasty Eye When ever my birds have a eye problem I spray colloidal silver on the eye itself . If its bacterial it clears up ,I also do it to if they have swollen eyes from a respiratory infection .Its a great safe fall back that kills bugs and sooths in one . I use it for wounds and put it in there water to stop cross infection if someone is looking poorly and I'm not isolating them .In-fact I put it in there water if I do separate them to help their immune system battle whatever ails them

Thanks everyone, I have bought some coloidal silver and will apply it a couple times a day. After i first applied it, he seemed to enjoy them being flushed out. He let out a couple of crows and they seemed to be a bit more open. Hopefully this will do the trick.

I got it from the health food shop at Kalamunda Central. $12.75 for a 125ml spray bottle. It also comes in a bigger bottle which would be added to their water bowl. It seems to be improving a little. the better eye is now really quite good so will see how the 'bad' eye goes onver the next couple of days.
