If you are thinking of ordering eggs and they have to be posted to you I thought this might interest you, Make certain the people are posting them to you on a Monday, that way at least there is not much chance of them sitting in the Post Office etc over the weekend. When you get the eggs, let them sit for 24 hours, pointy end down, tilted at an angle for 12 hours one way and then reverse the tilt for another 12 hrs before you place them in the incubator. This is supposedly to settle the embryos as they would have had a fairly rough trip getting to you. And then keep your fingers crossed. It is not the most ideal way of getting eggs, but if you have no other option, try it and hope at least that you get a couple hatch.
Ive just received 2 doz in the mail so will update you on my success rate and if anyone else has received any could you let us know how you get on with yours.

Thanks for the tip, I for one did not know this, but then I haven't progressed to incubating yet. I would love to hear about the progress of the eggs too, if you have the time

Thanks horses7. I had my only lot of posted eggs sent by overnight freight from Perth a few years ago. I didn't know about the settling bit. They went under a hen & hatched over half from memory. I'm guessing Australia post may not have been as expensive as the frieght company & hadn't even considered sending eggs through them. Is this how eggs are sent to & from the eastern states?

Yes they come from the eastern states by priorty paid mail, which is I presume would be the quickest way of getting them here, but because we are out of the next day delivery area, if they post them on a Monday, we get them on Thursday. You got a good hatching rate with yours, I hope mines as good with the one's I have just received

Well I received my first lot of eggs that I ordered from Sydney, none were broken, so now just have to wait a little longer to see if I get any chickies, fingers crossed. This was the first time I have ordered any eggs that have come though the mail so will be interesting to see what happens. She was really prompt in sending them, BUT have ordered another 2 doz eggs from a guy in Sydney paid for them nearly 3 weeks ago and have not heard yet when he will be posting them, hopefully it will be soon. Has any one bought any eggs from the eastern states this year and how did you get on?

I believe Nelly from BYP had 2 dozen sent from over east recently & had at least a 95% hatch rate. Hope yours go well. What are they?

I'm thinking of getting one dozen from over east sent for my next lot to go in. Not for any particular reason other than I want to try it out. The other half also wants some Indian Game's.

Hi Farmchooks, I haven't sent any eggs by post yet, but I have received them. each individual egg was surrounded by sawdust in the egg carton, the top of the egg carton was separated and then placed back on top and then taped back into place, then the egg carton was wrapped in newspaper and lots of bubble wrap, it came by express post marked fragile and always post them on a Monday. I have read that you must not wrap the individual eggs in plastic as they will sweat, but they can be wrapped in tissue paper but not be able to move in the carton, the eggs I received were all intact and soon I hope there will be some babies, dont forget to advise the person you are sending them to, to rest the eggs for 24 hrs prior to putting them in the bator. Hope that was of some help

received 2 doz eggs today from Sydney, but sadly 3 were broken, these were packed in sawdust in the carton, but instead of bubble wrap around the cartons, they were packed in shredded paper, don't know whether they just had an extra hard trip across or the shredded paper is not as good as the bubble wrap. so only ended up with 9 buff sussex and 12 silver spangled hamburgs. since the odds are lowered will have to keep my toes crossed as well as my fingers in regards to chickies hatching.

Well my next lot of eggs have started arriving. I should get my last dozen tomorrow.
I got 12 silkies and 12 pekins from perth, and 12 silkies from over east. Waiting on 4 indian game and 8 araucana's, hopefully they'll be here tomorrow! I was hoping to put them all in the incubator tomorrow, but didn't get them all today.
One thing i noticed though, is i candled one of the eggs to see which end was the pointy end, and noticed a bubble floating around... is that normal? I was too scared to check any others hehe, so i guess i just have to wait!

as the eggs usually get a pretty rough ride in the post, it is recommended that you let the eggs rest at a 45 degree angle for 12 hours and then reverse it for another 12 hrs before placing then in the incubator, also I would recommend keeping the bought eggs that hatch in a separate brooder to any other chickens that you hatch out at the same time and then if there is anything wrong with them all your own chickies dont catch it. (from experience has happened to me) Good Luck!!!!
