Did anyone see on Better Homes and Garden's Doctor Harry treating a chook with scabby legs with Ivormectin? Is this the only treatment for chooks with scabby legs? Also, is it some kind of mite that causes it and how can I treat the pen for the mite? Thanks Chris

it is a mite that causes scaly leg mite, and ivomectin is a good treatment for it, make sure when you get it that you find out if it is a drench (therefore needs to be taken internally) or and external treatment for the correct method of application. things like coopex will treat teh pen for mite..................you also need to keep out the wild birds such as galahs as they will introduce the mite. other methods of treating for scaly leg mite include smothering the chickens legs with vaseline, but this is only a short term solution. the mectin group of insecticides also wormm your birds as well i am sure others will come along with some other suggestions to help you. you may be able to get teh ivomec from your local vet rather tahn buying a large bottle at teh produce store.

Thankyou Jacquie. Where on the body would the external treatment go? Chris

the external treatment is usually done under the wing or on the back of the neck.
