Hi All, I have an Old English Game Bantam Rooster Who seems to have something irritating him around his bum. He has a bit of a build up of poo ( like dags) around his bum and is always pecking at it as if it is itchy. I Have treated him and all my other birds for lice etc with poultry dust and for worms with a poultry wormer that is mixed with water. The area around his bum and the back of his legs is bare due to all his pecking at it. Apart from that he seems fine. He runs around and crows as normal and all the other chooks are fine. Any suggestions?

Watch the poop dosnt get fly blown(its very easy at this time of year ) .Can you cut the dags off ? I would spray the area with a somthing soothing like collodial silver or apply a mix of honey (unprocessed)natural antibotic and crushed garlic. It could also be a allergy to somthing like poultry dust or a grass etc .

Give the area a good wash and get all the poo off for a start. then you will be able to get a better look at whats going on. Could also be other chooks are vent pecking.Chooks will peck at blood. The more blood the more pecking either way you can buy some disinfectant spray like betadine and liberally coat the area. the spray will dry up any blood and also disguise the the bald spot and stop the pecking. Also help with any infections

Thanks everyone for your advice. The rooster is much the same. I picked all the poo away and sprayed him with an animal antiseptic. He seems happy and full of energy but he still seems to be pecking and scratching at it. I will continue to keep doing this and just hope it clears up soon.

Do you think I hatched in the wrong nest?

Joe does your rooster have scabs around his bum? If he does I would go out at night and check around the affected area as it could be red mite. Red mite are smaller and darker than lice.
We have used avian insect liquidator for treating external parasites including red mite. but be careful they can reside in crevices and reinfest your chooks.
The other question is the poo light coloured, crumbly and smelly or any other odd colour. He may need a course of antibiotics like OxyB.

Would Maldison be ok to treat them with? and is it ok to mix with water and dunk chooks into it? I think the poo was light coloured and quite smelly and it seems to be stuck almost partly in his bum. Is OxyB the brand of antibiotics and where can I get this from? Thanks for the help.
