A couple of my girls have lost feathers around their necks only. The rest of the feather growth is fine. I thought they may be deficient in something but they get the same as the other girls. Does anybody have any ideas??

A couple of mine lost some on their backs .After checking for lice and fleas Ross tested feathers and it came up with Iodine and salt deficiencies. Ours are on tank water so no minerals or salt in the water. I have put a salt block in their pen(horse) added 1 cup natural unprocessed salt to 1000 Lt water tank they have as there water supply and added Kelp to their food .All is well feathers growing back. If you have 2-4 ltr water containers add 1/3-1/2 teaspoon of natural salt to the 2 -3 ltr of water. Not a bad practice at this time of the year as they are loosing alot of salt in the heat.Unprocessed salt also has other minerals in it .Table salt has no minerals and has added aluminium , not a good Idea to use that.

Thank you for that. I will try the salt and see what happens. It makes sense I guess, we are loosing a lot of salt too with this heat. I have lost all of the feathers from around my neck too.

Anne, is it ok to use iodised, aluminium free sea salt, or do I really have to go for the expensive Himalayan hand harvested natural salt ? (I'd spend more on the chooks than on us )

I know what you mean pianochook. OH gives me a funny look when I bring home special things from the shop and I tell him he can't eat them because they are for the girls.
