We sold a silky on the weekend and the new owner says it has developed sneezing, eyes stuck closed... any ideas on what it might be? It has been separated from the others and put inside under a lamp.

It sounds respiratory. If its eyes are closed stuck it sound like a secondary infection which needs antibiotics. A trip to the vet is a good idea, otherwise buy some broad spectrum antibiotics like Avicycline. I would also put the chook onto a ricketts diet to help give it a boost. Having it separated and with a lamp is good.

Where do you get the avicycline and the rickets diet? will city farmers have it?

This is the ricketts diet, don't worry if you do not have all the ingredients This amount feeds one bird. Each serving consists of:
½ to 1 x cooked egg yolk… crumbled into mixture 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil.. 1 very small drizzle of honey 2 x tablespoons natural yoghurt - no sugar 2 to 4 tablespoons rolled oats or Baby rice 1 dessertspoon of beef tin cat food…… Not dog food (I use fish cat food) A few grains of multi vitamin powder 2 tablespoons of grated apple..
Mix to make a crumble mixture not runny, if you have to roll into pellets and force feed, and then gently massage the neck in a downward motion to get it down into the crop, then do it, the bird may be too weak to eat or have lost the desire to eat….
Always have fresh clean water available at all time for the bird and good quality food Feed the rickets diet in the morning. Also have her ordinary feed and fresh clean water available at all times: if it has not been fully eaten with in 12 hours throw it out... make another one the next morning.. don't add to it.. clean out the dish it was in also before adding the new mixture.
Another good antibiotic is Triple C, there is a place in Midland called Swan Valley Birds 51 Great Nothern Hwy, number is 9250 3980. City Farmers may have it too, you would have to check.

Hey thanks for all your help Tina. The other silky hens that were originally with the sick one all got the same thing and were all treated as you recommended. They all recovered. I really appreciated your fast and helpful advice. Sandy
