Our pheasants are settling in well to the new chook run & hopefully we will be getting our chooks & ducks soon - however we have a problem all our neighbors have cats!! Ive seen atleast 4 differnt ones in my yard! they are terrorising my birds & using my sons sandpit as a litter tray!!! thismorning i found my golden female pheasant bleeding all around her beak obviously the cats had startled her last night. they cant get in to the run or my aviaries but they sit on top & climb the fronts & stalk them. They have to go!!!!!! Ive spoke with all the neighbors & there attitude is there is nothing they can do! Df wants to bait them but im not that cruel. Ive seen a new cat proof fence but its $200 a metre & im not paying that to keep somebody elses cat out!! Any ideas anyone?? Im thinking of getting cat traps & trapping them & taking them to the pound. .......... does anybody know were i can get some traps from??

Our shire rangers loan cat traps for this purpose. Cats arent allowed to wander into other yards or you get fined I dont have any cats now but it was a pain trying to keep them in the yard thats for sure Maybe you could see what your shires policy is and use it to your advantage. If you catch a cat and the shire can locate owner they might be fined and more inclined to keep it locked up at night etc.

it may seem cruel, but either bait them or shoot them, cat's are annoying, and they deserve to be removed, they are destructive and actually cause more deaths to poultry and aviary birds, then foxes do. Contact your shire, and ask them, as it is now illegal for cat's to roam I think you'll find that the council will be more than happy to help. Good luck

grr........... just rang the shire - im in the shire of kalumunda & they have no laws regarding cats watsoever - they said it is legal for me to trap them in my own yard however if i take them to a vet/shelter & they have id i could be charged with stealing!!!!! ridiculous!!!
Neighbors of a lesmurdie resident complaind about roosters now they are looking at banning them alltogether - just simply on a noise nusiance level - i ring & complain about cats - on a nusiance level becasue they are terrifying my pets & on a health issue because they are toileting in my kids sandpit - i get nothing !!
........off to find some cat traps then............ anybody know were else you can get them??

typical, check with CALM, they will advise you of the laws regarding cat's, all yoo have to do is tell them that the cat's are killing native wildlife and watch the S*&$ storm from there!

I thought if you contact the shire rangers they could help with traps. I know if you have possums they give you a loan of one. How could it be stealing if the cat is on your property and you do not know who the owner is. You would be doing the right thing by taking it to a shelter/vet and getting them to see if they are chipped. That is what I think anyway.

I think if it's in your yard, then you have a right to defend your animals, i know in the country if a dog is hassling your livestock on your property you are allowed to shoot it, I've reluctantly had too on several occasions, the owners weren't too happy, but it's the law so too bad, I've even had my own dog shot at, but the little bugger is too quick and they miss, so unfortunately he hasn't learnt his lesson yet maybe one day

Well I would ring the rangers again. As we have caught several dogs and cats over the years on our property and we call the ranger to come pick them up. It's up to them to chase the owners then and you wont have to worry about getting into trouble for stealing. Good luck Oh I am in Wanneroo shire don't know if they are different to other shires

That's not a bad idea Carolyn, I know that the Northam/Toodyay rangers will only keep an animal for 72 hrs which is the legal minimum, after that it's goodnight, so I'm not sure what shire your in chellntrev but that might be a good option for you. Good luck

yeah my shire is the same you ring they lend the trap and you sign a thing saying you will not trap and keep native animals but if you get a cat or possum you ring the ranger who takes the animal . hunts up the owner and they get a fine or the cat gets a needle they are a pest and should have to be licenced like a dog to stop people from have 3-4 in one home and breeding and dumping them and as for the messing in the kids sand pit DISGUSTING and why should you put up with it .. I am with Brendon about bumping it off ( sorry to responsible cat owners ) but if my dog was attacking the neighbors pets they would have it destroyed !!! you can get all different types of cat traps from wa poultry equiptment in baldivis and a guy i know swears it only takes 25 min on the exhaust of the car and it goes to sleep can't garantee it myself as the ranger takes our away and as they should it is what they are paid to do they would quickly take a dog !!!!!!!!!

i had a similar problem with neighbors cats around the bird aviary when i lived in the built up area so i run single strands of wire an connected them to an electric fence unit and used the bird netting as the earth this worked really well a down side to this is if you forget to turn it off when working on the cages and touch the positive wires the 6000 volts makes you hit the high notes an sing like a bird ;D
