I read somewhere, I think in Storey's book, that you shouldn't raise chicks in a pen recently vacated by older chooks. Presumably there can be nasties left by the older chooks that the chicks aren't immune to. As I am almost constantly moving out one batch of pullets to make way for the new chicks I was wondering if this explained some of my chick deaths. Anyone had any experience of this? Any ideas for "sterilizing" the pen before moving the chicks in? Obviously scrubbing out the feeders and waterers. Maybe taking off a couple of inches of topsoil (good on the compost heap) and replacing with clean soil or woodchips, and I would think spraying poultry dust into the shelters. Anything else?

Try a strong disinfectant some of them are used for soil sterilization . I used to use one called JEYES FLUID dont know if its available here bought mine in UK. You should try hardware or stock supplies. Or it will come up on google. Look at disinfectant called Virkon s and Delete available from on Ebay.

I've never had a problem with putting young chicks in a pen that older chicks have been in. Of course if you had had a disease go through the last batch that were in the pen it would be a different story. I just clean the little house within the pen and put fresh hay in it, and clean the food and water bowls.

same hoepfull if your bigger flock is healthy you should have no problems... New hay and bedding on the house is a good idea
