I have never been much for medicating my chooks, or any animals, being a bit mean about the cost. Sounds as if some of you have particular medications you keep on hand for specific maladies. Any suggestions on what a chook "first aid" kit should contain. Also, how do you administer them, orally, in their water or food? And where do you get them and at what sort of price? I like the idea of natural remedies and I have St Johns Wort and Borage planted round the pens, with nasturtiums and comfrey nearby. Don't really know if they do any good but they are there, anyway.

Good thread Mike I dont have a first aid kit as such, its more a case of having bought a million things trying to find something that bl**dy worked at the time lol Some things I have..... Probiotic Supplement - Gives weak chicks a boost. Can buy from a pet shop. Put in their water. Price hmmm I think about 15 bucks or so. Ivomec - controls internal/external parasites (seemingly non effective against Toodyay dwelling stickfleas though : . Brought from stockfeeds or online. Put on skin on back of neck. Cost me $50 for 250ml. Frontline for Cats - Brilliant for controlling stickfleas and other external parasites. Buy from stockfeeds or pet shop. Put on skin on back of neck. Way too expensive when you've got as many birds to treat as I do. Cost $40 for 3 pipettes which treats about 15 bantams. Avian Insect Liquidator - For external parasites. Spray on the bird. Bought from pet shop. Cost..can remember lol, I think it was about 15 bucks. Vaseline - Good for lots of things. Buy it from the supermarket lol. Cost about 3 bucks Scaly Face & Leg Treatment - Brilliant for treating scaly leg. Paint it on the legs. Bought it from pet shop. Was $12 or so for about 100mls. Poultry Dust - Controls fleas, lice etc. Dust the bird with it Think it was about 10 bucks from stockfeeds. Bran - My darling old Silkie hen Bernice goes straight onto bran mash when she gets a bout of sourcrop. Natural Yogurt - Also for Bernice when shes got sourcrop. Umm cant think of anything else at the moment lol. Think theres a wormer floating around somewhere but I cant remember the brand. Also plan to get some Sulphaquin when I can find some. I like the idea of natural remedies but its so hard to get anything to grow out here besides aloe vera lol.

Crushed garlic in the water bowl supposed to be good against internal worms and external fleas. Wormwood planted in chook area supposed to repels fleas ,at least its organic its worth a try. Prevention is better than cure as they say.

The stuff I always have on hand is Sulphaquin, purple spray ( for cuts etc) and Tylan. and just purchase Moxydectin as I need it, I find that this is the easiest (as I am quite slack sometimes) as it treats inside and outside parasites and you just put it in their water.

I have never medicated my chooks, but i do cut a bit of "aloe vera" and throw in for them to peck at every now and again, about fortnightly.

I have most of the above. and I add minced garlic to the chooks water about once every couple of months for worms.....read it in an organic book somewhere. Also can get a treated crumble for worming which comes from the stockfeeder.I also have wormwood planted around the pens which is good does fleas and stickfast. Haven't see any at all on the chooks since I planted it

I've never medicated or vaccinated my chooks, except for treating mites. This is a personal choice. My belief is that the stronger the chook, the stronger and more resiliant the offspring is going to be. To me signs of a weak or sick chook = culling, the sooner the better. Sorry if this sounds harsh but just my personal opinion, I know there are others that won't agree

Hey sorry to ask a dumb question but what is sourcrop? A digestive bacteria imbalance?
