Just read Caladenias reply to your post on BYP. I had a feeling that was the case. Seemed a bit odd to be something that happens during incubation, once in a blue moon maybe but not quite often. So with 4 toes being recessive, you should still be able to breed from the lovely dark blue chick as long as its partner isnt carrying the 4 toe gene, which would be quite unlikely.

It was good news, it will be interesting to see about the one with yellow legs whether they darken or not.

Yes it will be. Her post has got me thinking though. I knew that light skin was recessive, but I hadnt clicked that both birds have to carry the gene for it to express. Therefore, even if half my chickies are 'half reginalds', the hen is obviously also carrying the light skin gene for the chicks to have ended up with pink skin. Hmmm bummer, seems like my darling Pearl is the culprit. But thats not so bad, as long as I cross her with a roo that doesnt carry the light skin gene......

The yellow legged chick has black skin, thankfully. So hopefully none of the other chicks carry the yellow leg gene. When trying to sell their offspring I don't want that hassle. At least you are finding out which hen not to breed with what rooster, not such a bad thing really.
