My babies are a week old and have been with their new mothers for most of that time and have bonded well. Even though I had two broodies take the 12 chicks they were in separate sections in the main coup. This morning I was letting one lot out for free time outside when I noticed that both mothers were only a wires distance apart from each other. They both seemed totally unphased about each others presence. So I thought it would be so much easier if I could have them in one of the large pens during the day instead of sectioning bits off all the time (very time consuming). So I let the lot out together and closely watched. The two mothers finished up having a dust bath in the same hole with 12 chicks running around them. No aggression was shown by either hen. Fantastic I thought. So pushed them all into the end pen which had already been chick fence proofed. It is amazing to watch. Both mums look after all the chicks. At one stage one hen had all of them. So it can work as I knew it sometimes :)could. This way the main coup is left open for the hens laying eggs which was a big problem I had to deal with. I will post some pictures shortly. Have to take them first...lol
