Good morning All, I'm hoping someone out there can guide me. We have discovered another rooster (number 8 out of 10!) among our girls...this one is my 5yo's favourite chook Charlotte - now known as Charlie. He is proving to be rather loud - as roosters are I can't bring myself to get rid of him he's so friendly and really to be honest part of the family! Has anyone had any luck placing a rooster in a rooster box and if so how large would it need to be...any assistance would be greatly appreciated! I'll also try an post a picture of him as he was supposed to be an australorp but I think he may be a Plymouth Rock....would love confirmation! Thanx!

sounds good to me do you just want to put him in a box that is dark so he sleeps in and so do you and the nieghbours or a permanent pen coz you could free range him by day and when he goes to roost at night cover over his house with a canvas etc so he thinks it is still night till you uncover him( hessian or canvas are best for a bit of ventilation )!!!

Covering his house with canvas wont stop the noise, he'll still crow like a banchee lol. I've never used a rooster box as I dont have to worry about roo noise out here thankfully but I have heard that the best roo box is one made out of bricks, it seems to be the most soundproof. Maybe theres someone on here who uses roo boxes that can give you some pointers

I thought I might be able to get away with a rooster until this afternoon.... My daughter took Rayza, our dog for a walk to the beach and on the way back a dog kept following her. Anyway it followed her home, she has a shire tag so I called the duty ranger. She says, ok whats your address, i told her, she says oh I live on that street! I said wow what number are you and turns out she lives 2 doors down and I can see her yard from ours!! Darn, foiled again!! ;D lol

Gettin off topic again, sorry By the way, the dog is having a sleepover here tonight, the rangers going to pick her up in the morning. Kids will be sad, shes gorgeous, a black retriever x kelpie I think. Rayza's been trying to chat her up but she only wants to play!! Just as well i reckon

Lol wendy. Am so glad I dont have to worry about hiding or keeping roosters quiet. I'd have a very hard time trying to do it as I've got 14 of the buggers at the moment

lol you definitely dont have a chance at winning lotto, 8 out 10 being roosters AND living 2 houses down from the ranger

Again off topic, but the stray dog went home to its loving family last night! They were very pleased to have her back home. Little girls beloved pet. her name was Molly which suits her to a T.

Yeah horses, can you beleive it?? i hope I dont end up with as many drakes/roosters as roleyranch though, Im a sook when it comes to getting rid of animals My partner buys lotto for nearly everyday of the week and I told him this morning that he'd be better off going to the TAB and buying $1 mystery bets with the $30 each week, Im sure we'd win more $$

Update on rooster box. We tried using a cardboard box, it worked a treat, not a peep out of Charlie. My other half lets him out first thing in the morning. He is a little grumpy and put out but it has saved his head being put on a chopping block lol and of course he does continue to crow through out the day but at least the neighbours won't be woken at 4.30am!
Worth a try for anyone on a small block...

Found this on BYP
Here is my cheats night box: Take one appropriately sized terracotta pot that has drainage holes in the bottom. Square/rectangle is best. Get your boy at dusk/night from his perch. Put him on the ground in his pen. Put the pot over him. Uncover him at an appropriate time eg just before you go to work; 7am is good as it is well and truely light so a lot of people are awake

sounds like a great idea fluffychook, i'll be heading out to my nearest garden centre to find a pot large enough. Terracotta will certainly muffle the crowing more effectively than cardboard!
