Hatch day was yesterday for 12 silkie blue eggs and 2 white silkie eggs of my own. Also 5 duck eggs. Progress has been slow, this morning 8 pipped of which 2 have hatched. One white and 1 blue/black The duck eggs have had 3 pip but no progress on that. Funny thing is the one that we thought was going to jump out of its shell and hatch days ago has not pipped yet. I will take pictures later.

What an exciting day and I was out for most of it. So far out of 14 silkie eggs 11 have hatched, 1 is still going and 2 are silent. I have a mix of blue/black, white (my own) and I would say possibly splash. As for the duck eggs 1 died, 1 has not done anything and 3 had to be helped out and are looking very exhausted. But going by the success of last time I still hold hope for these little guys. They are still in the incubator along with 2 very noisy silkie chicks and one chip chip chipping silkie. I took a photo of the 9 in the brooder, sorry the quality is not better but I don't have the greatest of camera's. The ones that look black are more blue black i527.photobucket.com/albums/cc357/fluffychook/100_1192.jpg[/IMG]

I am a very proud mama. Going to try and put a chick under one broody tonight. Hubby thinks I should raise the blues myself as we had no losses, but lost 2 under the broody hen from my last batch. As for the ducks, one is doing well, the other two are still exhausted. But going from my last hatch I have not given up on these two. We may need to give them a little bit of tlc to help them get over a difficult hatch. They are all still in the incubator so no pictures yet

I am amazed at the success of the blues, 100% fertility, 9 have hatched and 1 is still going. I just took one duckling out of the incubator, the other two are not looking good. Later will make up a ICU for them and try and give them some sugar water. At least if they go it will be in comfort. This whole hatch including the chicks was a difficult one. Lots of help had to be given as they seemed unable to turn in the eggs. I was out when my daughter felt the need to intervene. But I would have agreed with her by the amount of time that had passed. This time I thought I had the humidity just right, so maybe I need to allow it to stay higher next time. All chicks are strong and healty and I put two under one of the broody hens last night. She is sitting tight this morning so hopefully they are ok under her. So tiny, I forgot how small they are when they hatch...lol

Hi fluffychook, Im pleased that the silkies are doing well. Sorry to hear about the ducks. Can you tell me more about the ICU? Just interested in case we have similair problems. We have made the brooder box for the ducklings out of a clear plastic storage tub. Do you just make another similair for babies having a hard time? Thanks, Wendy.

Wendy, we just use a plastic storage tub and put a warm blanket and heat pack with a light for warm. The baby is given sugar water a drop at a time over its bill (beak). I believe you can use electrolytes as well, but we did not have any. The duckling placed in ICU this morning has already moved into the brooder with the other duckling and 1 chick. I have placed all the other chicks under my broody hens who took them like they had hatched them out themselves. Made all the right noises and helped them get under her to keep warm. Was great to see. The last little chick in the incubator is about half way through chipping at the shell, so when it is dry it will go into the brooder for a bit and then join the others under mummy hen.

Cant get much better hatch rate than what you got from the silkies, absolutley brilliant, postage eggs you are usually doing well if 3 or 4 hatch. Now all that needs to happen is that there is 1 boy and 11 girls.

lol H7. Actually I reckon if I have too many roosters I won't have any trouble selling them. Especially if they are blues. Anyway the hatch has finally finished. We had 12 out of 14 eggs hatch. A mix of colours of dark blue/black, splash, light blue and some of which I have no idea. We were very surprised with one of the ducklings being light brown with light brown legs. We racked our brains and came up with the answer. Redchook gave me her dark campbell duck and drake of which the drake died. We put some of those eggs in the incubator. Shelle remembered that she was having trouble keeping her duck breeds apart. So we think that instead of getting baby Ben babies we have a cross. I might message redchook and see what breeds she has. I know Bantom Saxony she had several drakes. I will take a picture shortly and let you look. I have put all of my chicks under my two broody hens and am very pleased to say the adoption process went over perfectly. Mums and bubs are all doing well. Well to what I can see, they are not coming out from under them. Except one which was bok boked and put back under her wings. So cute. Especially as she is a first time mum. I will get some pictures of them in a few days when they all come out for their first excursion.
