Can anyone suggest some good books for the beginner chicken raiser. Got my incubator and eggs ordered and would like to do as much research as possible. Local library hasn't really got a range for the beginner.

Hi Plink,Im sorry I cant help about the books, but I have found the different poultry forums on the internet to be really helpful. Another good one besides WAPT is www.backyardpoultry.com it is an Australian site with lots of articles and forums for beginners and advanced breeders. You can find out everything you wish to know .Incubating, feeding, housing & health etc. Lots of experienced members and happy to answer questions Good luck with your hatch. I just got my first incubator and eggs a few weeks ago and I now have 11 Pekin duck eggs and 36 mixed Pekin and D'uccle bantam eggs in it. I have found all teh info I need from these two forums. Hope that helped a bit Cheers, Wendy

Plink, Ive got quite a few chook books but like wendy look to the internet when I wanna know something. However, of my chooken books the best one for beginners I reckon is a book called "Choosing & Keeping Chickens" by Chris Graham. It is a british book but the basics of chook keeping are still pretty much the same as here. It has chapters on caring for chickens, hatching and rearing etc. This book also has breed profiles for over 50 breeds of chicken with info about looks, personality, egg laying etc. Being a british book, some of these breed arent available in Oz but its got all the common breeds ie Australorp, Orpington, Pekin, Silkie etc etc. I cant remember how much it cost but think it was around $20. I bought it from Collins Booksellers

Thanks Wendy, checked out the web site and seems pretty informative. Now saved to my favorites. Thanks Steph, have checked internet book sites and can order. It will be good to have a book or two for a bit of reference to read every now and again. Once again guys thanks for your input, it has been very helpful. Cheers and have a great day

Hi Plink, are you going to breed a specific breed of chook, if you are Bellsouth have a good range of books on different breeds that can help with what chookens to keep for your breeding stock and what to look for in the show bird. The Australian Poultry Standard (if you can get one at the moment) has the standards for all breeds and some of the National Breed clubs have the standard for their breed on their sites

Hi Plink, A friend recommended Jackie French's 'Chook Book' not sure if it goes into incubation. It's available through the Good Life Book Club, they have a few titles on chickens, ducks and other alternative subjects. www.goodlifebookclub.com
