Last week we had a wet week, then it went warm. I have read that this is ideal conditions for Cocci. Yesterday I noticed one of my 7 week old silkie chicks looking a little hunched and while I watched it it did a watery black poo. Today it is scratching around, eating (it has food in its crop) and drinking. Not been able to catch its poos. It looks better but still not 100% So would this be cocci? I have never seen it, so I have no idea. Thanks for any advice

I've never had cocci with my chooks so I cant offer much help. Arent most chick starter crumbles medicated for cocci? Although maybe thats just to build up resistance not prevent it. I dunno, Im probably babbling on about crap lol

one of the main signs of cocci is blood in their poops, and you are right they usually look a bit fluffed up and sort shrink their neck into their shoulders, if you think a chick has cocci it is better to isolate straight away from the others as it will go through the lot of them with devastating results, there is a certain amount of coccidiat in chick starter pellets, this does help to prevent it but if the chicks do have it they need to be treated with sulpha quin or a similar product

I buy my chick starter from better pets and gardens. I asked the salesperson if it was medicated and was told no. I was concerned with having ducks and medicated starter so thought it was better. I just checked the chick and it seems to be ok, scratching around and doing all the normal chicky stuff. Not really fluffed up. If it had cocci would it not be sick for several days at least? I tried to get some Sulpha-Quin today from my local feed shop. He just looked at me rather blankly and said um, no we don't. No other chook looks unwell. I think I will go and do a poo check and see if i find anything sinister

Just checked on the chick, and on cue the sweetheart did a poo for me. Firm but black with a little bit of white. Eating and drinking, preening for several minutes, then went into its hunched position for a few minutes, then moved on, scratched around, ate some and has now gone to bed with the rest.

Let them chooks out to free range this morning, little chick looks fine. Enthusiastically scratching in the grass with all the other chicky babes. Very relieved as it has a great pom pom. I think it is male which is great. My sister is wanting a white male.

Thanks, this was the little smokie/yellow coloured chick I hatched from my OWN eggs. I hope this means I will get more great pom poms.

Good on ya fluffy, their is nothing like the thrill of when the chicks hatch, but it is especially good when they are from your own breeding stock
