Great that the children got to see it hatch. So exciting for them. We were crowded around ours for the first and we still find it exciting. The chicks do sleep alot when first hatched as they are very tired so don't worry about that. When you get a chance us picture addicts would love to see them. Also any updates on the sticky chick.

Thats great to hear that they've hatched As fluffychook said, its always exciting on hatch day, no matter how many chicks you've hatched. Dont worry about the chickies sleeping so much, they'll be up and about before you know it and tearing around like lil roadrunners Oh, and yes piccies please! hehe

I will be sure to post some pictures as soon as i can! Unfortunately, once i decided i was going to help the poor little stuck chook - it had already died I gave it a little burial under a rose bush and will help sooner next time! Next problem is going to be convincing hubby to let 'em live inside! (just while they're little!)

aw, my condolences ikbokchook Unfortunately thats part of chook keeping, sometimes we lose one. Often when a chick is unable to hatch on its own its because it is deformed or sickly in some way and therefore is probably better off running around in chookie heaven but that doesnt made it any less upsetting. How are the others going?

What a shame and as Steph said, it is part of chook keeping. I am glad you were able to put it under a rose bush. I wish I had the same luxury, my dog would dig them up. I look forward to seeing the pictures too

It was great that you were actually able to see some hatch, it is absolutely fascinating, no housework gets done in my place on hatch day as I sit and watch them for hours, very addictive, as you get to know your incubator a bit better your hatches will get more successful, eg how much humidity etc, the 2 bators that I have are a Covatutto, in this one the chicks dont start hatching until the afternoon of the day they are due to hatch, but in the Brinsea, they start hatching the day before, I dont know why, the only difference in in the Covattuto the heating element is at the bottom and the Brinsea it is at the top. also this a help section in FAQ on how to post photos, if you still have problems let us know and we will try and help you.

Hooray! That worked! I thought i'd put on another one! In this one you can see that the foot on one chick is a bit bent. Maybe i had the temp too high? would that explain why they hatched early? the other one seems to have no problems at all - and they are both doing normal chookie stuff! yay! i'll try working on making the pictures smaller next!

The bent toes could be a temp problem in the bator, have you a 2nd thermometer to check the accuracy also to make your photos smaller go into all programmes, select accessessories, select paint, when you have selected the photo then stretch skew 20%

Thanks horses7! I had the temp set at 38.5 as per the instructions with the incubator (brinsea octagon 10 egg) but after looking around i think 37.5 would have been a bit better! have set another 4 eggs at 37.5 and will see what happens with these!
