The last 4 days I have not had 1 egg from the layer pen, couldnt work out why, thought it was really strange that they should all go off the lay at the same time, checked all the little hidey holes in the yard in case they had decided to start laying somewhere else, no luck, well yesterday morning the mystery was solved, they had decided to lay in a different spot, under the nests in the far back corner, which is quite a dark spot, saw the eggs, and muttering under my breathe (dumb chooks why are you laying there) had to get on my hands and knees and just about crawl under there to get them, was just putting my hand out to get the eggs, and saw this great big FAT goanna having just about to have a lovely feed. I did not realise I could back pedal so fast to get out of there. My son (he is a good boy, sometimes!!!) went under there for me and got him, the goanna is now living up the road in an empty paddock and hopefully he will stay there

Lol horses7, d**n lizards hey. My latest problem, after the egg eating crows finally settling down, is blue tongues coming in the yards looking for water and in doing so wandering into the houses, finding the eggs and having a snack while theyre there.

I had a good laugh, I have a good imagination, so added a head bang, a scream and back peddle that would have won a car race. Then the brave son looking at his mum, acting big and brave getting the eggs, shaking his head and walking away muttering something under his breath. We have a resident LARGE skink that we have had for years in one of the pens. It has a home under the shed. Never had any trouble from it. Yesterday saw it for the first time in about a year, mother hen was making quite a noise. The skink took no notice and just went into its home. Never lost any chicks or eggs, so must be ok. Saw a couple of bobbies recently but they seem to have gone too.

The goanna did not seem perturbed at all, he was only interested in guarding the eggs, had no eggs again yesterday so I think the blasted thing has found his way back, he must be a homing goanna.
