I love their colouring. I went to the Kemscott show today and saw a buff pekin, she was absolutely gorgeous. The shed the poultry and pigeons where in was a bit warm for the poor things. One large game bird was suffering quite a bit. I hope his owner was about and took him home.

Yeh I must say I always feel sorry for the birds at the ag shows at this time of year. We went to the toodyay show last year and it was very stuffy and humid in the chookshed, not the nicest place for the birds to be but I'm sure the owners do the best they can to keep their birds comfortable. Last summer I got my OH to put a pop up sprinkler in each chook pen so that in the worst heat of the day I can turn them on for 5 mins or so (bore water) and the chooks really appreciate it. The pekins love having a shower under the sprinkler, whilst the silkies prefer to wait til I turn them off and then go n have cool mudbaths Im not looking forward to the heat of the coming months, mind you I was very lucky last year not losing any birds considering our hottest day was 46.2c!

I was discussing with my daughter about a watering system for summer. This will be our first with ducks, so we will need something for them during the heat. I must admit a pop up sprinkler sounds the way to go. Just need to tap into the current system with a tee piece........MICHAEL, your busy tomorrow with a sprinkler....lol Oh boy I can see the look already and the comment, 'What, they are chooks for goodness sake'. He is only slowling joining in the chooky/duck passion.

Thanks wendy. fluffychook, you'll find that the ducks cope much better with the heat than chooks do, especially the silkies which as you'd know really struggle. My ducks coped with the extreme heat quite well, sure they were panting a bit on 40+ degree days but we all were! lol. Having a pond to swim in makes it easier for them to cope. Mind you, having said that, on the really hot days my ducks hardly ever got in the pond lol.I thought they'd pretty much live in the pond all day to cope but they seemed to prefer lying in the dirt beside the pond. I havent got sprinklers in the duck pens, hadnt thought of it actually hmmm more work for OH hehe. I reckon they'd luv playing under the sprinkler
