I was told that one chick out of a dozen posted eggs is a good result.

I think it is more to do with the quality off the incubator. I have had three lots of eggs from the East this year and the hatch rates were
11 from 24 17 from 24 10 from 24 with these ones 8 were broken in the post and the remainder had a showed a lot of damage when candled, at 14 days 4 had not developed so was left with 12 of which 10 hatched.
One lot was from country QLD and the other two were country NSW.
About three years ago I had my only other posted eggs from country NSW and hatched 27 from 42 so I think a lot has to do with the incubator.
Just my opinion

I think the other thing that makes a difference is where the eggs come from, mine are from members of breed clubs, these people are interested in promoting the breeds concerned. If you get eggs from people that advertise on the internet I think there interests are more of a commercial nature and the quality of the parents might not be as good. The other advantage of belonging to a club is that more often than not you only pay for postage (in my experience anyway, others may find it different).

HI Featherfoot thanks for that info I am always interested in other guys hatching rate This was a new janole ? I have just bought, my old one needed an update and i blamed it for the first lot of losses so changed it but when I break the eggs open as I do after each incubation just to see what is going on in the egg, the most of the are not formed. Out of the two dozen Wellsummer eggs i got from QLD the first lot only two had a part formed chick in it the second lot i have in the bator now and are at day 30 so far only one has hatched and it was three days early so I have hung on to see what will happen to the rest then I will break them. Duck eggs I had the same problem with Nothing in them at all they were from NSW but if I incubate my own eggs I get 11 out of the 12 hatch two passed away just after hatching but the rest of them are fine as is the second lot I put in from the same birds this time only 8 out of 12 hatched the others were infirtile just to give you a bit of a rundown on what has happened to the eggs I have got from the east any thoughts you have please pass them on I do not use a bator all the time I use broodies to do the work for me thats why I have quiestioned the bator thing and put it to the test, broodie hatching so far 16 eggs under a speckled Sussex 14 hatched I have 14 wellsummer eggs under a RIR now due out in a week so I will get a better idea so far this is it

If you are not after show quality foul you might like to give these people a ring, they have not updated their page for a while so I don't know what is available, they ship day old's around Australia. The only problem is you would have to pick them up from Perth airport. They supply sexed chicks but you can ask for some cockerels to be included in the order. It might seem a bit expensive but if you order a good number it will keep the costs down. www.freewebs.com/peakpoultrysupplies/ratesservices.htm

I have always kept show quality even though I do not show any longer cant see the point of not keeping true to breed birds I gave up showing a few years ago but I still like to see them as they should be thanks for the link I don`t think its for me I have all the breeds I need all I want to do is to introduce new blood into them thats the hard bit

I reckon the travel did the main damage. The change in pressure in the plane and the multi handling can do major damage to eggs.

I think the temperature has a big impact too I was told once day time temps get above 26 degrees don't order or sell posted eggs it gets to hot in the vans and metal cages they use.
