A mate has one duck and one drake this lot has just got 16 little ones running all around the place why cant you keep chicken eggs for the 16 days and expect them all to hatch I have had another look at the last 6 eggs i have from the duck saga they all look like there is a body in there no pipping yet they are due today and tomorrow ?? they must be dying in the shell if this lot do not hatch out but there kept at a steady 37.7 with the humid at 50 to 60% topped up every 4 days or so never goes below 45% that seems to be ok to me whats your thoughts on it

next lot I would drop the temp down .5 or to 37.3 it may be a bit warm especially this time of year I normally have mine on 37.5 my calibrating thermometer is on 37 and I have the humidity on 45%

ck i used my calibrating thermometer the same one that I use for my cheese making and it reads the same so I know that the bator is reading well. All the facts I got from the manual that came with the bator when i bought it a few months ago, would that little diff make a lot of diff to the eggs in side is this why I am having troubles with the hatching IE to wet just a tad to warm I thought that hen`s body temp was around the 40 mark so I would have got it ok ? still no pipping yet and there due today Trev

You have to play around a bit to get the sweet spot in each one , what I have found by lowering the temp I get a lot less leg and feet issues . It is the core temperature of the egg that is important not what it reads in the air. If you get a lot of large chicks that die late or get stuck it is too high humidity , if the air space is very large and they appear like they have been vacuum sealed it is too low humidity

the latter could be a problem with me then I think. I have lowered the Humid down but each time you put in water and only a half glass of it the humid jumps up to 60 /65 % the duckling got stuck as well and i had a hell of a job getting it out of the shell and i thought I had lost it ,It did not move for long time just laid there it seems to be find now a day later on

Are you able to manage the humidity, like adjusting the size of the air vent? I have joined CK in not raising humidity during the last 3 days. I leave the vents opened full. So humidity is around 40% to 50%. When it is a hot dry day, humidity drops.

not on this one chooky in the book I have it tells me to raise the humidity up to 65/70 for the last three days I have two trays in the bottom of the bator but you have to lift the lid to fill them two small wholes on the top and 4 round windows maybe I should take off one of the round windows to see if that get`s it down even if I fill the one tray the gauge goes off when it`s low and I put in 1/2 a cup of water and off it goes back up to 55/60 % the last three days I use both trays Trev

Try running it with just one tray of water, or swap the tray for a smaller container? It is the surface area of the water that affects the humidity, not the volume. My incubator is homemade. I use a plastic takeaway box for the water and works fine. If I want the humidity to increase, I either block the air vents or place another container of water in the incubator.
The last few batches, I have only used 1 container of water, getting around 50% humidity and the result is stronger chicks. I am not sure if it affects the hatch rate. I have gotten 100% success rate back when I increased the humidity. But a successful hatch depends on so many variables, the incubator being just one of them.

Hi chooky the trays are built into the bottom of the bator the only problem I can see with it is that you cant fill the trays while you have the turner in you just cant see where to fill up so i am going to have to modifie this some how with a small pipe that runs outside the bator that I can put water in without it going all over the floor if you follow me I think I will the be able to keep the humidity down ? Quambie you have the same incubator as me and I was having all the same problems as you so I bought a seperate thermostat and humidity measurer. The temperature was correct but the humidity reading on the bator was 65% and the new gadget read 95% so I checked with another one and yep same reading so I lowered the humidity on the bator to 30% for the entire time and that seems to work. A 1/4 of a cup of water at a time is the maximum I can put in or the humidity sky rockets. PS: I also run the temp at 37.4. Hope all that helps

Madison,
I believe the incubator only measures the humidity and warns if it is too high. It does not manage the humidity, does it?

putting extra cups of water in just before lockdown /has increased my hatch rate these air blow incubators /very dry so more watrers need that they state in booklets /lowering temp will help also but more water is better up to 80% hymd for ducks even sprayinf /misting hatching eggs/for ducklings/hope this helps m8
