I have always had not too dark eggs from my girls, the last week and a bit one of them has started to lay a darker egg so i have put some in the bator along with the others, trying to get a real dark egg from them could take a few years to get there but could be worth it in the long run . I was told by a guy in the UK that wind each show he enters only take the darkest eggs you have and start with that so off we go will be an interesting exercise this will be the first year out of the way by the time they start to lay Trev

Generally the first 20 eggs will be the darkest after restarting laying like marans , You need to get a rooster from the darkest egg as well.

That was the bit did not fully understand, he told me that it was the hen and not a lot to do with the rooster I know that most of the jeans are from the female I think it was 52 to 48 from the rooster, a lot like sheep so I have to concentrate on this but last years rooster I have running with them did arrive from a darker egg only time will tell but I need to be on the best track first of all or I will loose a lot of time Trev
