I have had several white yolks in my free range hens recently. I feed my girls the best food, plenty of greens and room to roam. I have yolks ranging in almost orange to pale yellow but never white before. A friend also found some in free range eggs she brought from the shop. Anyone know the cause?

Hi redchook, I read your posting with a lot of interest, so much so that I done a little checking up myself,The only single reply I got from this was: one view was that, white corn can cause white yolk's, could this be the cause in your case.

I haven't come across it myself it sounds like they have run out of pigment , have the legs and face area changed colour at all ? I would try giving some beetroot to the girls and see if that darkens the yolks.

Free ranging is supposed to get the eggs a nice rich yellow/orange colour. But with everything pretty much dry here, there isn't a lot around for them to eat that will help with egg colour.
